The Rapid Growth Project 5 (RGP5) formed part of BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s program to increase its Pilbara iron ore capacity from 155Mtpa to 205Mtpa by the expansion of mines, railway and port infrastructure.
Our team provided engineering services for the RGP5 railway network, delivering all rail engineering and design functions across the full project life cycle via a framework agreement.
This included in-house studies, detailed design, tender design for design and construct contracts, validation of design and construct design packages and engineering support during construction.
Design and engineering services were provided within the civil, track, bridges, infrastructure, and signals and communications disciplines.
The scope of the railway portion included major duplication of more than 270km of heavy haul track, including track works, earthworks, drainage and access roads.
Project wide systems included upgrades to the automatic train protection systems, modifications to the train control systems and new and upgraded wayside signalling and communications systems.
The project was completed in 2010 with an exemplary safety record.
