Our Projects division delivered a purpose-designed and -built workshop facility at Dampier 8 Mile to enable Rio Tinto to retro-fit their entire locomotive and ore car fleet with a new Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) braking system.
Our team carried out a rigorous concept design process together with facility end users (ECP Team), prior to detailed structural and services design being undertaken by the Contractor.
Purpose built to meet specific needs
The facility footprint was governed by the dimensional requirements to accommodate 12 ore cars along a single track, plus three locomotives on a parallel track all under cover. The building design incorporated a 65m long service pit to accommodate six pairs of incoming ore cars over the pit at any one time. Two 5m long service pits were added to the locomotive side of the workshop to provide a work area with improved safety, easier access to the underside of locomotives, and improved ergonomics.
The building also had purpose-built sea containers positioned at regular work station intervals along each outer wall for the storage and retrieval of ECP kits and components. Compressed air, water and power services were provided to each work station.
Site works were supervised by a multi-disciplined Calibre team of construction supervisors, in conjunction with project engineering support.
The project was completed in time to meet the commencement of the ECP fit out program.
