G&S Engineering were engaged to refurbish a dolphin deck for Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) at Cape Lambert.
Due to shipping shut windows, a single deck was repaired in the shut window using traditional methods. When the next dolphin repair contract was let, G&S pioneered an installation method utilising twin cranes from a floating barge, which enabled two decks to be completely refurbished in a single shipping shut.
This resulted in a significant increase in efficiency for both G&S and RTIO and improved the task safety profile by reducing the number of dynamic lifts. This improvement in safety and efficiency paved the way for G&S to win the subsequent deck replacement works throughout 2014.
Careful planning and site execution
Due to the high risk nature of working over water, and off a barge, detailed risk assessments were conducted at multiple stages in order to identify potential hazards and ensure a safe working environment. As a result of careful planning and site execution, G&S successfully completed the works within the shutdown time frame, incident free.
