As part of the Brockman Syncline 4, Phase 1 Project, our Projects division was engaged as Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) consultant to deliver the Brockman 4 Railway Project.
This involved the construction of 41km of standard gauge, heavy haul railway from the existing Brockman 2 mine to the new development at Brockman 4.
The train axle loads are 36t with speeds of up to 80km per hour. The track utilises new concrete sleepers and a new head-hardened rail.
Further deliverables for this project included a rail tunnel south of the existing Brockman 2 load-out and the construction of a new siding and a series of drainage upgrades on the existing Rosella-Brockman 2 railway (originally built in 1991).
A new fibre optic backbone to support a rail signalling system was also designed, installed and commissioned to slot into the existing Rio Tinto voice and data communications system.
The project was completed on schedule and under budget, with an exemplary safety record.
